There are many options for green web hosting using renewable energy but I have found a few providers that stand out from the crowd. In addition to participating in responsible office practices, the following companies have taken steps to reduce their energy consumption:

HostGator – Wind Energy

HostGator, a Texas company, offers wind powered web hosting. All of their wind engery is supplied by local Texas wind farms through the purchase of RECs. Not only do they purchase wind energy to power and cool their equipment, they purchase RECs that equal 130% of their energy usage.

1&1 – Water Energy

1&1 is a local hosting provider with U.S. headquarters in Chesterbook, PA. They are now purchasing RECs that are supplied from a hydroelectric facility local to their Kansas data center.

AISO – Solar Energy

AISO, located in southern California, is the only hosting company to generate their own solar energy on site. They also employ a number of other methods to reduce energy usage such as using solar tubes for natural office lighting and painting their building white to reduce heat absorption.
